UNC Basketball Moments After – UNC vs. N. Iowa 91-69 Win

UNC Tar Heels Basketball Team Sleep Walk through the 1st Half Then Wake up in the 2nd half to Blow Out the Panthers in the Quarter Finals of the Battle 4 Atlantis

by Derrick Clyburn

The North Carolina basketball team came to the Battle 4 Atlantis to see how they were progressing with all of the new players. In the 1st half, the Tar Heels seemed to be lethargic with no energy and they were lazy on defense allowing Northern Iowa to shoot 60% from the field. North Carolina continued to struggle early from the 3-point line shooting a paltry 18% from the field. UNC went into intermission down 41-35.

In the second half, the Tar Heels came out with more energy, effort, and urgency on both sides of the ball. Their on-the-ball pressure gave the Panthers fits and North Carolina opened the half on a 32-6 run. A 28-point turnaround. Cormac Ryan, Harrison Ingram, and RJ Davis hit seven 3-pointers during that stretch which blew the game wide open. The Tar Heels hit 9-13 3’s and would never look back. The ramped-up defense applied by the Heels in the Second half made the difference in the game. They had 9 blocked shots and 4 steals causing the Panthers to turn the ball over 13 times.

North Carolina had 6 players in double-figures led by Harrison Ingram who had his first Tar Heel double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. It was the first time in three years that the Tar Heels had 6 players in double figures in a game. UNC would go on to score 56 second-half points to put away the Panthers 91-69.

UNC Bright Spots

Harrison Ingram had 16 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal.

Elliot Cadeau had a career-high 15 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 block.

Cormac Ryan had 15 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 blocks.

RJ Davis had 13 points, 1 rebound, and 4 assists.

Jae’Lyn Withers had 21 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 assist, and 1 steal.

Armando Bacot had 10 points, 8 rebounds, 1 steal, and 3 blocks.

Needs Work

The Tar Heels need to start the game with energy, effort, and urgency not allowing inferior teams to hang around. They need to be more assertive and determined on offense playing with purpose.

North Carolina needs to shoot better from the three-point line throughout the game. They shot 18% from three in the first half of the game but made a much better showing in the second half going 9 of 13 from the 3-point-line.

North Carolina also needs to do a better job of finishing around the rim. They missed too many easy shots around the basket and need to be under control.

Final Observation

North Carolina improves to 4-0 on the season. The Tar Heels are continuing to figure out their identity as a team. We had a chance to see players step up from the bench like Jae’Lyn Withers who had great energy on both sides of the ball to help the team succeed today. The bench actually outscored the starters in the first half. Armando had a subpar game and we still won by 22. This bodes well for the Tar Heels not having to depend on RJ and Armando to win games.

Cormac Ryan finally stepped up from the perimeter and hit three 3-pointers. Harrison Ingram has been steady hitting four 3-pointers. Cadeau and Withers got in double figures as well. Outside shooting has been the only real issue starting out this season. If they can be more consistent shooting from the perimeter throughout the season the tar Heels will be hard to beat. Next up is the winner between Villanova and Texas Tech at 2:30 pm on Thursday
