UNC Tar Heels Basketball Team Leaves the Battle 4 Atlantis 2-1

by Derrick Isaiah Clyburn

The Tar Heels basketball team played their third game of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament on Friday afternoon. UNC came out in this game with a lot more urgency and energy than in past games and was able to find a good rhythm on the offensive end and had better ball movement and shot selection in this game.

Defensively, North Carolina was really good around the rim with 12 blocks for the game but struggled to guard the three-point line as Oregon hit 8 threes in the first half and 12 for the game. Armando Bacot had a dominant game with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 blocks and Cole Anthony added 19 points.

The Tar Heels had a comfortable 5-8 point lead throughout the game but could never put Oregon away. Oregon battled back late in the second half and got the lead down to 2, but the Heels were able to ice the game with late free throws.

UNC Bright Spots

Armando Bacot had career-high 23 points, 12 rebounds, 1 assist, and 6 blocks.

Cole Anthony had 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 assist.

Brandon Robinson had 13 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Garrison Brooks had 9 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 blocks.

Needs Work

The Tar Heels need to do a better job of guarding the three-point line. They still have problems closing out on shooters.

Final Observations

The Tar Heels were able to bounce back with a good win against #11Oregon after a tough loss to Michigan. It was very important to see how UNC would come out and play after their loss to show us what type of team they are. They came out and played well, which is a good sign for this team going forward. Injuries continue to be an issue for this team with Leaky Black out with a strained right foot so the rest of the players will have to continue to step up.

KJ Smith provided some good minutes for North Carolina in the first half and second half with Leaky Black out for the game, and when Cole Anthony was in foul trouble. This proves that Roy can play him in the future in similar situations and gives the team another ball-handler and player that can be in the rotation.  This tournament was a good learning experience for the Tar Heels and the competition was definitely something that was needed for such a young team to see how good they can really be going forward.
