UNC Tar Heels Basketball Team Take Their First Loss

by Derrick Clyburn

The Tar Heels basketball team are in a learning pattern. The next two weeks will be the toughest test of the season before they begin ACC play. No team will go undefeated, so this is a time when teams take their lumps before they find out who they truly are. North Carolina missed their back up point guard Seventh Woods who is out for this weekend in the concussion protocol. It showed with 14 first-half turnovers and a stagnant offense.  UNC allowed Texas to get 31 points off their turnovers. Texas was more aggressive and physical than the Tar Heels.  UNC had only 2 fast break points for the game. The Freshmen led by Coby White who had 33 points kept UNC in the game and gave them a chance to win. Two of the seniors Luke Maye and Kenny Williams struggled mightily on both ends of the floor.

UNC Bright Spots

Coby White had 33 points, 2 rebound, and 3 assists.

Cameron Johnson had 16 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Nassir Little had 11 points and 6 rebounds.

Luke Maye had 11 points and  9 rebounds.

Needs Work

The Tar Heels need to do a better job at stopping dribble penetration. The wings for Texas made something good happen by scoring or getting an offensive rebound. The Senior Leaders have to step up and keep the team focused when adversity takes place. UNC must stay aggressive and keep their intensity for the entire game.

Final Observations

It is early in the season. These tough games will show Roy Williams who he can trust when the team is struggling. The freshmen showed up and held their own in the second half. They fought hard and didn’t give in. That’s a good sign. The seniors must play at a high level and play within themselves to help these talented freshmen overcome the adversities they will face. UNC must learn from this and move on. North Carolina needs to stay focused and play with great intensity the whole game.
