The Tar Heels traveled to Virginia for another tough road game. UNC started off better than they have in the past few games playing with a little more intensity. However, the Cavaliers’ intense defense would wear them down and Carolina was unable to get quality shots and turned over the ball entirely too much. Carolina would go through scoring droughts throughout the game and was unable to get into their offense, shooting only 29 % from the field. You could tell that UNC was uncomfortable with the slowed-down pace of Virginia as they were out of sorts throughout the game and was unable to get out and run like they are accustomed to doing.  While Virginia had no issues executing on offense and was just playing their game. Although the Tar Heels were not playing well, they were still in the game in the first half, but in the second half, they were just not playing well on offense to make a comeback and win.

UNC Bright Spots

Joel Berry was the only one that played aggressively on offense. He led the Heels with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

Needs Work

The freshman bigs need to play more aggressive and with more intensity both on offense and defense for this team to be more successful.

Theo Pinson needs to play better on the offensive side of the court. Lately, while he is on the court on offense, it has been like playing 4 on 5 because all he does is stand around and pass it around the perimeter. If Theo is on the court, he must be more aggressive on the offensive end and needs to be giving Carolina some type of scoring production,

Final Observations

Playing on the road in the ACC is always hard and now that the Tar Heels have played their two toughest ACC road games of the year, they can go home and everyone can go back to playing their game and get back into rhythm. As the season continues, this basketball team will continue to get better including the freshman as they continue to get more experience and the road games down the line will not be as difficult for them, as their team will benefit from the freshmen’s improvement and these first two road game losses.
